Where has it come from?

I think it is important to try and decide where this subculture has come from, why it exists and what has influenced it. I think there is a clear link to the 80's Club Kids with there desire to stand out and be noticed.

In the past being gay or lesbian was surrounded by taboo and I think that some people might have liked this, the feeling of rebelling against society.

However today same sex relationships are more accepted and maybe this has influenced this new subculture of Genderqueer. It is not about being gay or straight or male or female, instead it is about being a person.
